As soon as you walk into the Men's Ward, your pace automatically slows down. The light is soft, the space quiet. For centuries, men slept, lived and shared their days here. And today, you will discover their world – in a way that you not only see, but also experience.
The Men's Ward is not a backdrop. It is the story itself. The 22 original box beds are made. The oak furniture bears traces of daily use. You walk through a room that has remained almost unchanged since 1536. If you wish, you can even experience how comfortable such a sleeping place actually is in a specially prepared box bed. That alone is impressive. But what you experience here goes beyond just looking.
For centuries, care, faith and discipline came together in this space. This makes the Mannenzaal not just an ordinary historical location, but a silent witness to compassion and to how a city treated its vulnerable residents.
The Mannenzaal reopens to the public on 3 April 2026. Plan your visit and discover this special place in the heart of Amersfoort
This is the only medieval guest house in the Netherlands that has been preserved, including its interior. Here, you can still imagine how the residents must have lived. Initially, the guest house was only intended for the sick. Later, it became a guest house with separate sections for women and men. The Men's Ward and Chapel of the St. Pieters- en Blokland Guest House were already in use in the 15th and 16th centuries.
